Ellen (Jane) Gelin

Ellen Jane Gelin, of West Hartford, CT and Sarasota, FL died peacefully in her sleep on June 15. Ellen, the daughter of Lenore and William Warshauer, was born on April 25, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. She grew up in Middletown, CT. Ellen married Howard Gelin in May, 1950, and they had over sixty years of a wonderful life together. She leaves four children: Susan Louderback, of Malvern, PA; Nancy Aronson, of Longmeadow, MA; Amy McCullough, of Shanghai, China and Sarasota, FL; James Gelin, of Avondale Estates, GA; and eight grandchildren and three great-grandsons. Ellen was active in many volunteer activities. She was a member of Adath Israel women’s groups and Hadassah in Middletown, a board member of the Wadsworth Women’s Committee and Editor of their successful “We Cook Too” cookbook, a board member of Mark Twain House, where she was Director of the Frog Jump festivities for many years, and very engaged with Newington Children’s Hospital charities and children. She was an avid tennis player, known by her friends as “the Backboard”. The long goodbye has ended for her family and friends. Ellen was a beautiful personality and soul trapped in a broken mind and body for these past few years, yet she remained incredibly positive and loving throughout her decline. She was a good friend to all, a beloved Mother and Nana. Howard’s great love, supporter and best friend. A memorial ceremony celebrating Ellen’s life will be held Thursday, June 19 at 1:00 p.m., Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, Connecticut. Her burial will be at the Temple Beth El Cemetery, West Springfield, Massachusetts after the service with a light dinner following at Sinai Temple in Springfield. Mourners who would like transportation to the Springfield area and for a return to West Hartford should please contact Weinstein Mortuary by June 18. If desired, donations may be made to a charity of your choice or to the Michael Aronson Fund at The Association For Community Living, 220 Brookdale Road, Springfield, MA 01104
