Edith (Permutt) Szafman, 88, beloved wife of the late David Szafman, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2017. Born in Manhattan, NY, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Sophie (Schultz) Permutt, sister of Gerald Permutt and devoted mother of Mark and Steven. Edith grew up in Union City, NJ and graduated from Emerson High School. She married David Szafman in 1949 and they lived in Bayonne, NJ until 1990, when they retired to Jackson, NJ.
She attended classes at NYU and worked at Macy’s Department Store in New York City before raising her sons, and later was the secretary for Temple Emanuel in Bayonne. Edith was highly skilled at knitting, a needle-point artist and baker of legendary cheesecakes. She enjoyed weekly Mah Jong and poker games for many years, as well as frequent trips to Atlantic City. She was happiest when surrounded by her family, and loved the family vacation at Long Beach Island on the Jersey Shore every summer.
Edith is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Irene Szafman of Barrington, RI, her son and daughter-in-law, Steve Szafman and Michelle Kunzman of West Hartford, her brother Gerald Permutt of Rocklin, CA, grandchildren Sara Root (David) of Barrington, RI, Jared (Lidia) of Brooklyn, NY, Julia of Tel Aviv, Israel and Garrett of Saratoga Springs, NY, great-grandsons Samuel and Wesley and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by David, her husband of 57 years.
A private burial service was held in Saddle Brook, NJ on November 17.
