Edith (Gaberman) Sudarsky

Edith ‘Gay’ Gaberman Sudarsky died Monday, March 16th at her home in Bloomfield at the age of 92. Born in New London, daughter of the late Louis and Dora Schwartz Gaberman, raised in Hartford, Gay graduated from the Chaffee School in 1939, and Connecticut College in 1943. Married to Joseph Sudarsky in 1945, Gay was active in community affairs, including Child Family Services, West Hartford Children’s Museum, Connecticut College and the Loomis-Chaffee School. After raising three children, she returned to school at age 58, and received an M.P.H. from University of Connecticut. On graduation, she assumed the position of director of the Greater Hartford Chapter of the American Cancer Society. She is a trustee emeritus of both the Loomis-Chaffee School and Connecticut College where she was awarded the College Medal for her service. Gay was also active in the League of Women Voters, Child Welfare Services on the board of the Bushnell Memorial, and many other civic organizations. An organizer and supreme multi-tasker, she and Joe created a golf tournament to benefit UConn cancer research which has now been running for twenty-five years. She and Joe were happily married for 67 years. She is survived by her three children: Lewis Sudarsky of Brookline MA, Betty Sudarsky and her husband Michael Bradley of Newton MA, and Deborah Sudarsky and her husband Robert Wherry of Brooklyn NY; and her five wonderful grandchildren: Benjamin and Dean Sudarsky, Sam Bradley, Lucas and Olivia Wherry. Funeral services will be held in the Silberman Chapel of Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave., West Hartford, Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 1PM. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, March 18th from 4:00-7:00pm and on Thursday, March 19th from 1:00-4:00pm at 5 Saddle Ridge Road, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the University of Connecticut for Cancer Research. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
