Edith (Rosenbaum) Epstein

Edith (Rosenbaum) Epstein, 93 years of age, of Simsbury, died peacefully Friday, (February 25, 2011). She was the widow of Louis Epstein. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Bella (Bobrowitz) Rosenbaum. She owned, with her late husband, Rosedale Farm in Simsbury which has been in the Epstein family for five generations. First owned and operated by Louis’ father until his death in 1927, presently their son and family operate the farm. She leaves her son, Marshall B. Epstein and his wife, Lynn; her daughter, Sandra E. Bourke and her husband, Robert M.; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Bourke and his wife, Lisa, Julie Bourke Shirazi and her husband, Babak, Mandy Epstein McCullough and her husband, Mike, Lisa Epstein Kozlowski and her husband, Jon, and Kate Epstein, and four great-grandchildren, Kyle, Riley and Keegan McCullough, and Maya Bourke. She was predeceased by her brothers, Aaron, Frank, Morris, Philip and Oby Rosenbaum and her sisters, Anna Karp and Lillian Rulnick. Edith graduated from Hartford Public High School and frequently ice skated and played tennis in Kenney Park. Before moving to the farm in Simsbury she worked at the former G. Fox & Company in Hartford. Although a city girl, she truly loved the farm and continued to actively work until she was almost 90. The ultimate salesperson, she personally connected with all of her customers, from neighbors, to Connecticut Governors to US Senators who frequented the farm. She delighted in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was the ultimate mom, grandmother and bubbie. A strong UCONN basketball fan she enjoyed watching and talking about both Men and Women’s basketball, reading and knitting. Edith was a generous, kind, selfless, and hard working woman who was always independent and pragmatic. She was appropriately described in her High School yearbook as an optimistic pessimist who appreciated life. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 28, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Howard Herman officiating. Interment will be private at the Knesseth Israel Synagogue Section of Ellington Cemetery, Ellington. A memorial period will be observed Monday from 5-8 p.m. , Tuesday and Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. with evening services each evening at 7 p.m., at the home of her daughter, 5 Banks Rd., Simsbury.
