Dr. Lewis (I.) Case

Dr. Lewis I. Case, 101, formerly of Wethersfield and Westbrook, Connecticut, died on February 18, 2018 at Stone Rehabilitation and Senior Living in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts. Dr. Case was born in 1917 in Hartford, Connecticut the son of the late Max and Minnie (Milkowitz) Case. As a youth, he lived on his parents’ farm on Tower Avenue in Hartford. He attended Hartford schools and in 1935, graduated from Weaver Public High School. He graduated from the University of Toronto Veterinary College at Guelph Ontario in 1939, and in 1940 he opened his first Veterinary office in Old Wethersfield. In 1942, he closed his office and volunteered for service in the United States Army. He served in the Army Veterinary Corps in the China, Burma, India Theatre and achieved the rank of Captain.
Dr. Case was predeceased by his wife Beatrice (Sobol) Case. He is survived by his sons Max S. Case (wife Nancy) of Milford, Connecticut, Edmund C. Case (wife Wendy) of Newtonville, Massachusetts; grandchildren Emily Case (husband Brett Bentson), Adam Case (wife Alicia), Scott Case (wife Annemarie Vaeni) and Alexander Case; and great grandchildren Jonah Bentson, Oren Bentson, Elsa Case, Benjamin Case and Samuel Vaeni-Case. Dr. Case was predeceased by his sisters Bela Webb, Sadie Sharp and Gertrude Libman Sandler and his brother Isadore Case.
Dr. Case reopened his veterinary practice in Wethersfield in 1947. Initially his veterinary practice focused on large animals. As Wethersfield transitioned from farms to suburban homes, his practice changed to small animals. He was a founding member of Beth El Temple in West Hartford, Connecticut and served as President of the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association, served as Secretary of Pine Acres Swim Club and served as President and member of the Board of Governors of Standard Beach Association. He was appointed by Governor Meskill to the Veterinary Board of Registry Examiners and served in that capacity for 11 years. He was an avid gardener, fisherman, boater and a skilled cook. In 1982, Lew and Bea relocated to Boca Raton Florida and Westbrook where they were active members of their communities.
Funeral services will be held at The Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at 12:00 pm with interment to follow at Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery in Wethersfield, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be sent to Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek, PO Box 438, Chester, Connecticut 06412, or MSPCA-Angell Animal Medical Center, 350 South Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02130 or to a charity of one’s choice.
