Emblem

Dr. Daniel Marshall of Bloomfield, CT, formerly of West Hartford and Simsbury, CT, died Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the age of 102. He was the widower of Irene (Edelson) Robinson Marshall, who predeceased him March 30, 2020. Much beloved by his family and patients alike, Dr. Marshall was widely known and well respected throughout the greater Hartford area for the entirety of his medical career, which spanned more than six decades. He was the 2018 recipient of the American College of Physicians’ Henry Gift Award, which recognizes a Connecticut-based internist distinguished for a “lifetime of service to the care of patients and active participation in the local medical community.” Born in Port Chester, NY on December 15, 1923, to parents Rose and Max, a dentist, Dr. Marshall grew up and resided in Westchester County along with his sister, Florence, and brother, Kenny, until his studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he attended both undergraduate and medical school (Class of 1947). A proud alum, he flew to Pasadena to witness their sole Rose Bowl appearance in nearly 50 years on New Years Day of 1996. Upon his graduation from Northwestern, Dr. Marshall subsequently served in the U.S. Army as a medical doctor during the Allied Occupation of Japan from June of 1948 through April of 1950, helping to control rampant epidemics among the Japanese population and protecting U.S. troops from disease. When he returned to the States, he landed in Hartford, CT for his residency program at the Veteran’s Hospital. It was there he met his first wife, Beverly Miller (1929 – 1993), with whom he went on to have two sons, John and Richard. He became a pillar of the community, establishing his medical practice and providing clinical instruction at UCONN Medical School for over forty years. He was also a season-ticket holder for the CT Opera, which he attended religiously for decades, and which is where he first spied his second wife, Irene, who he would often comment from across the orchestra was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. They married March 14, 1981, and shared 39 years together before her passing—hosting many a holiday in their impeccable home, traveling the world via cruise ship, and always enjoying the finest of meals, especially and above all else, a good bouillabaisse. Dr. Marshall’s work ethic was staggering and his stamina unmatched. He retired at 95 and, at the time, was still seeing up to twenty patients a day. And even once emeritus, always found time for charitable work, providing free medical care for those who could not afford it. His social life, even as a centenarian, rivaled that of a twentysomething—going out to dinner and gathering with friends multiple nights a week. He read voraciously, had no patience for long phone calls (a full minute was a victory), and gave toasts and speeches with so much heft and gravitas you’d think they could sink. He was the family patriarch and ruled so indelibly that his passing, even at 102, came as a surprise given the sense of permanence he conveyed. Though no longer with us, his eternal spirit will live on in his legacy and in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who to whom he showed the utmost devotion, and who will continue to love and honor him always and in perpetuity. Dr. Marshall is survived by his sister, Florence Resnick; his son, Dr. John Marshall, his son, Aaron Marshall, and his mother, Carolyn Perkins; his son Richard Marshall, his wife, Susan Marshall, and their children, Charles and Anna Rose Marshall, great-granddaughter, Meadow, and her mother, Ashley Reid; his stepdaughter Maggie Sandberg, and her partner, Robert Schatz; his granddaughter, Dana (Sandberg) Raines, her husband, David Raines, and their daughter, Taylor Raines; his grandson, Gregory Sandberg; his nephew, Richard Robinson, and his wife, Anndee Robinson; his grandniece, Amy (Robinson) Federman, her husband, Eric Federman, and their children, Jacob and Samuel Federman; his grandniece, Julie (Robinson) Levy, her husband, Jerry Levy, and their children, Arielle and Talia Levy. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at 12:00pm at Weinstein Mortuary (640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford CT) with Rabbi Andi Fliegel officiating. Interment to follow at Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery (51 Jackson Street, Avon, CT) with shiva immediately thereafter at Congregation Beth Israel (701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, CT).
