Dorothy (Kletsky) Menchel

Dorothy K. Menchel of Farmington, formerly of Bloomfield and Manchester, passed away Wednesday (October 26, 2005). Predeceased by her loving husband Philip, Dorothy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was born Jan. 20, 1915, in W. Springfield, MA to Sara (Gold) and Israel Kletsky. Dorothy worked for many years as a bookkeeper for The Madlyn Shop in Glastonbury. Family, friends, and education were the central themes of her life. Her family was always foremost in her thoughts. She was proud of every one of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. As a young mother, Dorothy served as president of The Blue Hills School PTA in Bloomfield. She served on the original committee to establish the community college system in Connecticut. She and Phil were active in Temple Beth Sholom in Manchester, where they regularly attended services, lectures, and classes in Yiddish and Torah studies. They also audited classes at Manchester Community College. After Phil’s death, Dorothy moved to Middlewoods of Farmington, where she quickly made many friends and served on numerous committees. She never stopped challenging her mind and, in recent years, took up Scrabble, studied Spanish, and acquired computer skills. Her efforts earned her accolades in Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit matches. Dorothy was predeceased by sisters Belle and Ann and brothers Julius and Max. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Elaine Marcus of Syracuse, NY, and Atty. Arnold Menchel and his wife Atty. Shereen Edelson of Plainville; grandchildren Dr. Gregory Marcus and his wife, Dr. Rachel Kindt, of San Carlos, CA; Eugene Marcus of Syracuse, NY; Robert Menchel of New Haven; and Eric Menchel of Plainville; great-grandchildren Hannah and Rebecca Marcus; as well as many extended family members and new and long-time friends. The family wishes to thank Barbara, Stefanie, and Wanda and all the wonderful people at Middlewoods. Graveside services will be held Sunday, Oct. 30, 11 a.m., at East Cemetery, Temple Beth Sholom Memorial Park section of the cemetery, Autumn St., Manchester, with Rabbi Richard Plavin officiating. The family will sit shiva from Sunday through Thursday at the home of Dorothy’s son, Arnold. Memorial donations may be made to Temple Beth Sholom, 400 E. Middle Turnpike, Manchester, CT; Middlewoods of Farmington, 509 Middle Road, Farmington, CT 06032; National Kidney Foundation of Conn., 2139 Silas Deane Hwy., Rocky Hill, CT; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
