Doris Mintz Shapiro, 89, of West Hartford, CT, died on Sunday evening, May 13, 2007, at the Sarah Neuman Center, Mamaroneck, NY, after a long illness. A lifelong reader and keen observer of American history and politics, Mrs. Shapiro worked as a librarian at Trinity College, Hartford, before retiring 28 years ago. Previously, she was a substitute teacher for the West Hartford public school district and before that, a homemaker while her three daughters were young. Mrs. Shapiro was married for 53 years to Isaac Shapiro, who died in 1995. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late David and Rose (Marholin) Mintz. Mrs. Shapiro graduated from Hartford High School and received both her bachelor?s and master?s degrees from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA. Her 1940 graduate thesis examined leadership of the American women?s rights movement of the 19th century. After retirement, Mrs. Shapiro was a devoted volunteer at the Deborah Library of Congregation Beth Israel, in West Hartford. She and her husband were active members of the synagogue for many decades. She is survived by her three daughters and their families: Joan and Franklin Green of New York City; Phyllis Shapiro and Partha Bagchi of Readington, NJ; and Ruth Shapiro and Bruce Frankel of Larchmont, NY. Mrs. Shapiro was a loving grandmother to her four grandchildren: Jeffrey Green and his wife, Amy von Sydow Green, Julia Green and her fiancé Andy Shane, Max Frankel, and Alison Frankel and to her great granddaughter, Kitty Silveria Green. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 16, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, in Hartford, with Rabbi Stephen Fuchs officiating. Interment will follow in Hartford City Lodge Cemetery, Hartford. A period of mourning will be observed at the home of Ruth Shapiro and Bruce Frankel on Wednesday, May 16 (7 ? 9 PM) and at the home of Joan and Franklin Green on Thursday, May 17 (2 ? 9 PM) Friday, May 18 (2 ? 5 PM), and Saturday, May 19 (7 ? 9 PM).
