Dorinne (Karmen) Taback

Dorinne (Karmen) Taback, 68, of South Windsor, CT, passed away on Sunday (July 4, 2010) at St. Francis Hospital, surrounded by her beloved family, after a courageous five-year battle against thyroid cancer. Known affectionately as “Dodie” to her daughters (a nickname given to her by her mother), Dorinne was born on September 9, 1941 to Louis and Gladys Karmen. She grew up in the Bronx where some of her most vivid memories include the blizzard of 1947, Sunday mornings at the zoo with her father, and visits to Pelham Bay Park. Dorinne and Edward, who met on a blind date, recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. They moved to East Hartford, CT when Edward took a position with Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. Dorinne received her teaching degree from the University of Hartford in 1963 and taught at Ellsworth and Pleasant Valley Elementary Schools in South Windsor for three years. In 1965, when the Board of Education sponsored a contest to name the new middle school, Dorinne used town history to provide her students with some ideas which resulted in the naming of Timothy Edwards Junior High School. She worked at Avery Heights adult care facility in Hartford before joining Temple Beth Sholom as office administrator. Dorinne enjoyed her many years there working with Rabbi Wind and Rabbi Plavin. She subsequently worked for the town of Coventry where she rose to the position of town accountant over 16 years. An avid reader, Dorinne liked crossword puzzles, Scrabble and Upwords, and Sudoku. She also loved Broadway musicals, The Odd Couple and The Golden Girls. She treated her family with kindness, sincerity and unconditional support, encouraging each of them in their dreams and nurturing them through challenging times. Her ever-positive attitude, honesty, loving smile, freckled face, and beautiful glowing brown eyes will be missed. She was the strength and gentle guide of her adoring family. Dorinne is survived by her devoted husband Edward Taback, daughter Cara Taback and son-in-law Alexander Feinstein, daughter Emily Morgan and son-in-law James. Services will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Beth Sholom B’nai Israel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Light of Life Foundation (lightoflifefoundation.org) or the Abigail Alliance (Abigail-Alliance.org). The Taback family extends special appreciation to Dr. Sayed Bilgrami for his exceptional and compassionate care. Thank you for remembering Dorinne, as her family does, with loving memories, thoughts and prayers.
