David Katzin

KATZIN, David Katzin, son of Nathan and Judith Katzin, was born August 19, 1923, in Winsted, Connecticut, and died August 13, 2010, at the John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington, Connecticut. David graduated 1941 from the Gilbert School. He was President of his class and a three letter man. David served three years in the Navy, half of which he spent on the U.S.S. Yorktown. David graduated 1949 from the University of Connecticut. He was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi and played intramural sports. David was employed for 33 years by the State of Connecticut, Labor Department, Security Division. He served as an Employment Interviewer and a Manager of Local Offices in Bristol, Waterbury, and Hartford, Connecticut David worked for 10 years in technical services as a Selective Placement Officer in charge of the Certification of Specialized Foreign Labor Requests. He also served in all 20 local offices as a Handicapped Placement Officer in charge of Placement of Individuals with Handicaps. He was appointed Commissioner of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. He also served as Executive Secretary of the Governor’s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. David was named “Man of the Year” by the American School of the Deaf and received the EP Chester Award for work in the Field of Rehabilitation. Upon retiring, David volunteered for 10 years at the John Dempsy Hospital. David is survived by his wife, Zelda Goldstein Katzin; daughters Jenna Lash and Sally Kline; and grandchildren Elizabeth and Melissa Lash and Brian Kline; and brother, Benjamin Katzin. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Lori Katzin, and his sisters, Dorothy and Ruth Katzin. David’s funeral will take place on Sunday, August 15, 2010, at 12:30 p.m., in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut, to be followed by a cemetery service at Sons of Jacob Cemetery, Winsted Road, Torrington, Connecticut. There will be no shiva, but respects may be paid at the Duncaster Residence in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Contributions may be made to the charity of donor’s choice.
