Charlotte “Shush” Grossman, a resident of West Hartford, Connecticut and beloved matriarch of her extended family, died on June 19, 2013, at the age of 92. She was born in Waterbury on September 17, 1920 and was the only daughter of parents Ida (Fishman) and Harry Strogatz. She is predeceased by her parents and her brothers, including her twin, George (Buzz), as well as older brothers Joseph and Irving. Shush endured the early loss of her husband, Marvin Grossman, and her daughter, Alicia Grossman Lawrence, making her bond with granddaughter Erica Peterson and her family (husband Kevin, and great grandchildren Reilly and Alicia) an especially important source of joy. She was also a wise and doting aunt to her many nieces, nephews and their children. Shush graduated from Wilby High School in Waterbury and during her early adulthood she worked along with her husband and brothers in the retail shoe business in Waterbury and Ansonia. For many years afterward she served as the office manager of Family Practice and Internal Medicine of Orange, a primary care practice in Orange, Connecticut. In this position she was greatly appreciated for her patience, kindness and skill, and in turn she highly valued the rapport and friendships she established with the health care providers and staff. Away from work, Shush enjoyed spending time with close friends. She was particularly devoted to her family and to keeping family members connected with each other. She was an amazing source of knowledge, with information from the most recently born cousin to the tracing of family ancestry back to Moldova at the beginning of the 20th century. The advice she dispensed to her nieces and nephews was always thoughtful and expressed with a few well-chosen words and a smile. In addition to her granddaughter Erica and family, Shush is survived by nieces Cathy Karp (and husband Geoffrey Karp) of Bloomfield, Sherry Blenner (and husband Robert Blenner) of Charleston, SC, Marta Binstock (and husband Martin) of Lutherville, MD, Ogie Strogatz (and husband Richard Bikoff) of Walnut Creek, CA and by nephews David Strogatz (and wife Rosalind Thomas) of Cooperstown, NY and Steven Strogatz (and wife Carole Schiffman) of Ithaca, NY, and many grandnieces and nephews as well. The family extends its deep appreciation to the staff and private duty aides at the Hebrew Home who were so compassionate and caring. A family graveside funeral will be held at Waterbury Hebrew Benefit at 1:00 pm with Rabbi Howard Herman officiating. A memorial period will be observed at the home of Cathy and Geoffrey Karp, 22 Avery Road, Bloomfield, on Friday following the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Hebrew Home & Hospital, 1 Abrahms Blvd., West Hartford 06117.
