Charles Weiner

Charles Weiner of West Hartford and Palm Beach, Florida, beloved husband of Shirley Rubin Weiner, his cherished wife of 73 years, passed away on Sunday morning (June 9, 2013) at the age of 93. He was president of Weiner’s Clothes, the firm begun by his father Julius in 1927. The company was hugely popular throughout the greater Hartford area until Charles’s retirement in 1997. A family business, it included at various times his brother, two sons, and brother-in-law. Charles met his high school sweetheart Shirley at Weaver High School where they were members of the class of 1937. At that time he was moonlighting as clarinetist and saxophonist for Shep Merrill and the Aristocrats, a professional dance band. Although he loved music and hoped to make it his career, his father convinced him to do the sensible thing and join the family business. An avid golfer, Charles was a member of Tumblebrook Country Club where his long drives were admired even into his late eighties. A member of Congregation Beth Israel for more than 65 years, he also belonged to the Level Lodge #137 of the Masonic order. The son also of Sadie Boardman Weiner, Charles leaves, in addition to his wife, a daughter Andrea Weiner Gargiulo and husband Richard of Boston , a son Richard T. Weiner and wife Rhode vanGessel of Essex, granddaughter Alison Strong and husband Geoff, grandson John Gargiulo and wife Sidney, grandson Schuyler Weiner, and daughter-in-law Shirley M. Wyner. He also leaves two dearly loved great grandsons: Alexander and Henry Strong. He was predeceased by his treasured son Robert Wyner and grandson Jason Wyner. He leaves as well his dear sister Trudy Goldstein of West Hartford and husband Alexander and six nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister Irene Adelberg and brother Nathan with whom he worked for many years. A graveside service will be held Wednesday June 12 at 11 a.m. at Beth Israel Cemetery in Avon. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, CT 06119. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Weinstein Mortuary.
