Benjamin Cohen

Benjamin Cohen, 88 years of age, of West Hartford, died Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Hartford Hospital. He was the husband of the late Rebecca (Roznar) Cohen. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Elick and Esther (Kaganovitch) Cohen. Ben graduated Weaver High School in Hartford, Class of 1940. He was a US Army veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific. He helped rebuild the radar system after the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. While in Hawaii he furthered his background in electronics. When Ben returned to Hartford, he began his career fixing jukeboxes and went on to establish the former Supreme Radio and Television Co. in Hartford and West Hartford. He owned and operated the business with his wife from 1947 for 50 years, until he retired following the death of his beloved wife. He was one of the first RCA exclusive dealerships in the State of Connecticut and sold one of the first color television sets in Connecticut. He was a member of the Board of Directors of TELSA, which represented all of the electronic dealers in Connecticut. He furthered his education at Hillyar College of the University of Hartford receiving a real estate brokers license. He was a member of The United Synagogues of Greater Hartford in West Hartford, former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Synagogue, and a member of Jonathan Lodge No. 66 I.O.O.F. He was also a past president of the local chapter of B?nai Brith, a former member of the Elmwood Business Association, and member of the Jewish War Veterans. He leaves two sons, Jan Cohen and his wife Sheila of Naperville, IL, and Elliott E. Cohen and his wife Ava of Briarcliff Manor, NY; two grandchildren, Eric T. Cohen and his wife Jennifer of Cumming, GA, and Matthew T. Cohen of Briarcliff Manor, NY; two great-grandsons, Joshua and Zachary Cohen; a brother Saul Cohen of West Hartford, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Sidney P. Cohen, and his sisters, Bertha Kelman, and Helen Kraushaar. Funeral services will be held TODAY, Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Edward Cohen, one of his nephews, officiating. Interment will follow in the Jonathan Welfare Society Cemetery, Tower Ave., Hartford.
