It is with deep sadness that the family of Barbara Ann (Giber) Gross announces her death on Sunday, January 21st, 2018, at UConn Hospital. Barbara was the beloved wife of Harry Gross, to whom she was married for over 60 years. Their love for and devotion to each other remains an inspiration to all those she leaves behind.
Barbara was born in Hartford, on June 17th, 1934, daughter of the late Jacob and Belle (Orentlich) Giber. She was a survivor of the 1944 Hartford Circus Fire. Barbara graduated from Weaver High School in 1952, and remained a passionate and instrumental member of Weaver’s Class of 1952 High School Reunion Committee throughout her life. She was a proud graduate of UConn’s class of 1956, where she was an active member and Vice President of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. As graduation from UConn neared, Barbara was introduced on a blind date to Harry, who traveled from Montreal, Canada, to meet her. They married the following year. Once her children were in school, Barbara reentered the workforce, and enjoyed a long career in the insurance industry, retiring from Cigna as an officer. Barbara was an avid mah jongg enthusiast, playing weekly for many years. She loved traveling, particularly cruises, plays and concerts, and was always first in line to try the newest restaurant. More than anything, Barbara’s greatest joy was her four grandchildren.
Besides her husband, Barbara is survived by her daughter Tammy and husband Atty. C. Robert Zelinger of Simsbury, and Tammy’s daughters Brooke and Morgan, along with son Rick Gross of Avon, and Rick’s sons Gabriel and Zachary. She also leaves a sister Sandra Zitomer and husband Gary of Florida, her sisters-in-law Adele Ziss and Phyllis Abramovitz of Montreal, along with a multitude of family members and close friends. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
Barbara’s family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Ronald Szabo, who served not only as her primary care physician, but as her friend, as well as the staff at UConn Hospital who were so loving and caring during her final days.
