Anita ((Levinson)) Horowitz Karn Sigel

d. January 1, 1970

Several weeks shy of her 93rd birthday, Anita, dearly loved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her children on September 4, 2018. Life-loving, a mind like a steel trap! and optimistic, she grew up in NYC, the youngest of three born to Louis and Ida Levinson and attended Hunter College. Upon graduation she combined her love of Music and journalism writing musical critiques for The Journal Courier. In 1948 she married Benjamin Horowitz and after several years moved to West Hartford CT where they lived until his death in 1976. She was a founding member of Beth-El Temple in West Hartford and tirelessly worked for Jewish causes including state and national parliamentary positions within Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. This allowed her, while raising her three children, to use her acuity and brilliance meaningfully and fulfilled her needs outside the traditional mores of her time. In 1980 she married Marty Karn and the incredible love they shared enlarged our family as she opened her arms fully to Marty’s son, Bob. They shared seven years together and since then has remained a Florida Snowbird. Several years later she reconnected with a fellow Beth-El Board member from West Hartford days, Paul Sigel. They spent 12 married years sharing a love of travel, mutual respect, and navigating life’s difficulties together. Grabbing every shred of life, she was an insatiable lover of learning and her many experiences with world travel, the arts, her multiple cancer battles, gave her invaluable insights. Family, friends and her grandchildren have turned to her for sound counsel which was always dispensed with the purest love. She has been a lifelong teacher to all of us and the many lessons that we’ve learned will help us navigate a future without her. She leaves her children: Dr. Steven Horowitz Glastonbury, CT, Laura Ptalis (and Al) Randolph NJ, Barbara Halpert (and Burt) West Palm Beach, Leslie Germaine (Old Saybrook, CT) and Bob Karn (and Susan) Avon, CT., Her cherished 8 grandchildren, Ethan, Rachel, Hannah, David, Alexis, Zachary, Ben and Paige and Great Grandson,Gabriel. The family would like to thank Drs. Timothy Mark and Neil Rothchild for their compassionate concern and care. Funeral services will take place Friday September 7, 2018 at 1:30 in the sanctuary at Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Ave., West Hartford, CT. Burial at Beth El Temple, Avon.
