Abraham (Archie) Irwin

Abraham (Archie) Irwin, 97, of Northumberland, PA, formerly of New London, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2006. He was born April 28th, 1909 in New London, the son of Samuel and Fannie (Brumel) Itzkowitz. He lived in New London for 93 years and moved to Northumberland with his wife Sophie to be near to his son, Dr. Stephen Irwin and his wife Paula, of Lewisburg, PA. Archie was a graduate of the former Bulkeley High School in New London and, until recent years, activelytook pleasure in the planning and organization of the its annual alumni banquet. He then attended The Ohio State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Beforethe war, Archie was in the newspaper business forseveral years. He was employed by John Hancock Life Insurance for many years and reached the top echelons of national sales before retiring at age 62. He was a Charter member of Congregation Beth El of New London. Archie enjoyed sports and played football for Bulkeley and soccer at Ohio State. He also was an avid gardner, golfer, swimmer and fisherman and loved the beach and the ocean. He also loved music. For many years Archie and his loving wife wintered in Florida. His greatest pleasure, however, was spending time with his wife, adoring granddaughters, family and friends. In addition to his wife, son and daughter in law,he is survived by his granddaughters Corey Irwin of North Potomoc, MD and Dr. Abby Cooper of London, England. He loved and will be eternally loved and missed by his wife, son, daughter in law, grandchildren, family and friends and anyone that knew Archie. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with interment in the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3544 N Progress Avenue, Ste. 205, Harrisburg, Pa. 17110-9638 and/or Congregation Beth El, 660 Ocean Avenue, New London, CT 06320 Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
