Howard J. Wetstone, M.D.
Dr. Howard J. Wetstone of Bloomfield, died on Wednesday, May 24, 2006. He was born and raised in Hartford, CT, predeceased by his parents Murray and Natalie (Tonkonow) Wetstone. A graduate of Hartford Public High School, he subsequently graduated from Wesleyan University and served in the US Army Air Force. He then graduated from Tufts College Medical School in Boston, MA, and completed four years of postgraduate training in internal medicine at the New England Center Hospital, Boston, and Hartford Hospital. After a period of private practice in Hartford, he commenced a 35-year career at Hartford Hospital holding a number of positions including Director of Out Patient Clinics, Director of the Emergency Room, and Vice President of Corporate Medical Affairs. He was a Corporator of the Hospital. Upon retirement, he assumed the role of Medical Director of a managed care company operated by the hospital. He also served as Vice President of Medical Affairs of Connecticut Health System. A Clinical Professor at the UConn School of Medicine, he served on the volunteer faculty for over 40 years teaching Internal Medicine, Introduction to Clinical Medicine, Evidence-based Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology at University teaching sites ranging from McCook Hospital in Hartford, the VA Hospital in Newington, Hartford Hospital and the UConn Health Center in Farmington. Author of more than forty papers and textbook chapters in enzymology and pharmacogenetics, he was a member of the Society of Sigma Xi and a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. Long active in organized medicine, he served in many positions including the presidency of the Hartford County Medical Association and the Connecticut State Medical Society. At various times he was on the Board of Directors of Gaylord Hospital, the Connecticut branch of the American Red Cross and the United Way of Greater Hartford. He was a founder of the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network serving on its Board of Directors for 25 years which he chaired for three years. He was a member of the Town of Bloomfield Board of Education for fourteen years, chairing it for eight years and was President of the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE.) He served the State as Chairman of its Primary Care commission and its Alcohol Advisory Council and was a founder and President of the North Central Connecticut Emergency Medical Systems Council. He was instrumental in bringing the Lifestar air ambulance system to Connecticut. Dr. Wetstone was a member of Congregation Beth Israel, West Hartford. He leaves behind his devoted and supportive wife of 59 years, Roan Horowitz Wetstone, his children: Robin Wendehack and her husband Paul of Farmington, Mark Wetstone and his wife the Honorable Holly Abery-Wetstone of West Hartford, Dr. Scott Wetstone and his wife Gloria Shusdock of Farmington, and Dr. Jeffrey Wetstone and his wife Valerie of Columbia, MD; also nine grandchildren: Matthew Wendehack of Farmington; Leanne Wendehack and her fiancé Jay Castro of Manchester, Benjamin and Mallory Wetstone of West Hartford, Joshua Wetstone and Ian Shusdock of Farmington, and Sara, Jason and Bryan Wetstone of Columbia, MD, and a great grandchild: Jade Wendehack of East Hartford. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 28, 2006, at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford with Rabbi Stephen Fuchs officiating. Burial is private and at the convenience of the family. A memorial period will be observed at the home of his son, Dr. Scott Wetstone, 798 Plainville Ave., Farmington on Sunday between 4:00-9:00 PM with services at 7:00 PM, and on Monday from 5:00-8:00 PM at the home of Mark Wetstone, 14 Lovelace Drive, West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave., West Hartford 06119.
