Dr. Mark Stephen Brown
On Thursday May 5, 2005, Dr. Mark Stephen Brown, of 309 Fern Street, West Hartford, died unexpectedly. He was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on December 28, 1945. Mark was the beloved son of the late Benjamin and Pearl Brown. He was the devoted husband and soul-mate to his wife of 36 years, Judy Brown and the adored, selfless father to his two sons: Hagan and Lewis Brown and their wives, Alicia and Miki. Mark was Papa to his three precious grandchildren: Sophie Ann, Jack Benjamin and Tessa Pearl, all of West Hartford. He also leaves his cherished sister, Erma Broverman and her husband Les of Pittsfield, MA; his loving mother-in-law, Dorothy Friedman of West Hartford, and his beloved sister-in-law and brother-in-law Shirley and Ira Yohalem of New York, NY. He also leaves his Jake, his best four-legged pal. Mark received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University and his PhD in psychology from Yeshiva University. Mark’s professional life spanned decades during which time he worked tirelessly counseling children and families. Mark, Judy their sons and later their families spent summers in Kennebunkport, Maine. When not in Maine picking the best spot on the beach, telling think stories or combing through the children’s section of the Graves Memorial Library, Mark could be spotted in the front yard listening to NPR, reading the Times, sipping ice coffee or getting a quick beard trim from Judy. A voracious reader and story-teller, Mark loved everything from Yiddishkeit to LeCarre and was never without the latest from the Times Book Review. He was a frequent flyer at the Bookworm, always ending up there during a walk through West Hartford Center with Judy. In the last three and a half years, he shared this passion with Sophie, Jack and Tess who listened wide-eyed and open-mouthed to their Papa’s tales. In the “great green room” in Papa’s house, there are wall to wall toys, books and games and memories made that will never ever be forgotten. “Goodnight room”. Mark was a longtime member of the Emanuel Synagogue, West Hartford. Funeral services will be held on MONDAY, May 9, 2005, at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary of the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford, with Rabbi David Small officiating. Internment will follow in the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, Wethersfield. Shiva will be observed at his home, 309 Fern St., West Hartford. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Section of the West Hartford Public Library, 20 South Main St., West Hartford 06107-2406, or to the Graves Memorial Library, 18 Maine St., PO Box 391, Kennebunkport, ME 04046.
