Amy Friedman Vogel
Amy Friedman Vogel, 59, of Bloomfield, CT formerly of West Hartford, loving wife, mother, aunt and sister died surrounded by family on June 27 after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. The youngest of five children, Amy was born in Philadelphia, PA and spent her childhood growing up in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Westfield, New Jersey before going off to college at Ohio Wesleyan University. While at college, Amy was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, joined the Delta Gamma sorority and met her loving husband Philip, to whom she was married for 33 years. Her love of fashion and design combined with her business savvy, led her to a successful retail career beginning at Lord and Taylor in New York, NY, moving to The Davidsons in Atlanta GA, The Denver in Denver, CO and ending as Vice President, Merchandise Manager for Casual Corner in Enfield, CT. After having to leave her career in retail due to symptoms from MS, Amy did not let her illness get in the way of starting a successful second career from her home as a retail recruiter. Amy had two beautiful daughters with her husband Philip: Jessica and Stephanie. Jessica currently resides in New York City and has followed in her mother's footsteps by building a successful career in retail as a senior buyer for New York & Co. Stephanie recently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where she played on the varsity squash team and received a BA in Communications. Throughout the years of her illness, Amy continuously looked for ways to give back, volunteering for the West Hartford PTA and serving on the Auxiliary board for the Hebrew Home and Hospital. She always maintained her sense of the world and people around her. No matter what her physical condition, when asked how she was, she inevitably responded, "Fine thank you, how are you?" And she meant it. She was deeply loved by her husband Philip, her daughters Jessica and Stephanie, and her caregiver Ewelina. She was predeceased by her father, Leonard Friedman of Jacksonville, FL and is survived by her mother, Doris Friedman of Edison, NJ and siblings Susan Friedman of Chestnut Hill, MA, Shelley Holland of Hendersonville, TN, Ken Friedman of Raleigh, NC, and Jay Friedman of Kansas City, MO. A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave West Hartford, CT, at 11am on Wednesday July 2nd with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vogel Family Fund at Kingswood-Oxford School, 170 Kingswood Rd. West Hartford, CT 06119 or to the MS Society, 659 Tower Ave, First Floor Hartford, CT 06112.
