Wilbert Kaufmann
Wilbert Kaufmann, 93, of West Hartford, died Saturday, February 9, 2012, at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, in Florida. Born in Rosheim, France, he was the son of the late Max and Adele (Fisch) Kaufmann. Wilbert was a French army veteran of World War II, and spent five years in a German prisoner of war camp. He lived in France and Germany before coming to the U.S. in 1948. Both of his parents, as well as his sister, Irma Kaufmann, perished during the Holocaust.

Until he retired, he owned the former Meadow Meat Company in Middletown, which he and his partner Manfred Marx established in the 1950’s. He was a life long member of Congregation Tikvoh Chadoshoh (now B’Nai Tikvoh-Shalom.) He was an avid and experienced bridge player, attaining master status.

He leaves his wife Elaine (Silverstein) Kaufmann, sons Marc Kaufmann (Ellen), Steven Fruchtman (Joanne), and Frank Fruchtman (Janyce), as well as a daughter, Susanne Peterson (Carl), eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Marlyse (Heymann) Kaufmann.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, with Rabbi Marshal Press officiating. Interment will follow in Congregation Tikvoh Chadoshoh cemetery, Tower Avenue, Hartford. Following the burial, a gathering for friends and family will be held in the Community Room of the Somerset Condominiums, 1 King Philip Drive, West Hartford.

Shiva will be observed on Thursday, February 14, at the Kaufmann residence at the same address. Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation B’Nai Tikvoh-Shalom, 180 Still Rd., Bloomfield, CT 06002, or to the charity of one’s choice.
