Louis Mager
Louis Mager, Ed.D, 83, beloved husband of Rita (Kaufman) Mager, passed away on February 3, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital. He was born August 19, 1929 in East Haddam / Moodus, Connecticut, the son of the late Morris and Anna (Greenberg) Mager. Besides his wife, Lou is survived by his loving and devoted children; James Mager of Brookfield, CT, Renee Turner and her husband Kevin of Minneapolis, MN, Michelle Goldsmith and her husband Carl of Westlake Village, CA, and Julie Hughes of El Dorado, KS. He also leaves his cherished grandchildren Gabe, Joshua and Shanti Turner; Eric and Jacob Hagen; Brianna, Danielle and David Mager; and Rachel Hughes. Lou is also survived by his sister Estelle Breslow, his brother David Hurovitz and his wife Michelle, and his very special daughter-in-law, Chonita Milla. He also leaves numerous nephews and nieces, and brother-in-law Alan Kaufman and his wife Roberta. Besides his parents, Lou was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and Max, and his sisters, Lena, Rose, and Helen. Lou was a graduate of Nathan Hale-Ray High School in 1947 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut in 1952 where he also played on the UConn Baseball Team. Lou's Master of Education was earned at Temple University in 1955 and his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from the University of Hartford in 1961. Lou received his Doctor of Education degree from Boston University in 1971. Lou started his career in education in 1955 as a social sciences teacher at Bacon Academy in Colchester, CT. From 1957-1961, he taught social sciences and coached varsity sports at East Hampton High School, East Hampton, CT. In 1961, he was appointed guidance director at Coventry High School, Coventry, CT. In 1965, Lou returned to Bacon Academy where he served as the school's Principal for two years before moving to Enfield, CT in 1967 as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He was appointed Superintendent of Schools in Enfield from 1972 until his retirement in 1992. During Lou's tenure as Superintendent, he was given the "Golden Shield Award for Courage Under Fire" from the Connecticut Association of School Administration in 1986 and the "Distinguished Service Award" from the New England Association of School Superintendents in 1992. After 1992, Lou served as Interim Superintendent in several surrounding towns including Stafford Springs, Woodstock, Putnam, Pomfret, Canton, Suffield & Colchester. He was also a member of many professional and civic organizations.

Funeral services will be held at **SEE NOTE BELOW***2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek Cemetary, Route 151, Moodus, CT. A memorial period will be observed Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Quail Hollow Club House, 1 OakView Place, Vernon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
