Paul D. Bernstein
Paul D. Bernstein, 67 years of age, of Windsor Locks, passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at home with his loving wife and best friend, Theresa (Sheehan) by his side. Together they shared a home on Denslow Street with their two Shitzus, Ginger and Duke. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Milton and Rita (Witkin) Bernstein. Paul was raised in New Britain and Newington and was a 1963 graduate of Newington High School, then went on to attend Leicester College in Leicester, MA. After being recruited by the State of Connecticut’s Division of Special Revenue Agency as an executive assistant, he went on to serve as Special Revenue spokesperson, Legislative Liaison and as Charitable Games Unit Head. As a young man Paul was active in the Republican Party of Newington. He founded the Newington Young Republican Club in 1968 and went on to become Chairman of the First Congressional District Young Republicans. Paul served on the Newington Republican Town Committee from 1968 until 1985. In 1969 Paul served as campaign manager to Elmer Mortensen, Newington’s first Republican Mayor. In 1971 Paul won a Republican primary and went on to serve the first of seven terms on the Newington Town Council.

Paul retired from state government on July 1, 2009, with thirty-nine years of service. Paul and Terry enjoyed many fine summer weekends in Ogunquit and Wells Maine area at their seasonal cottage.

In addition to his wife Theresa, he is survived by two sisters, Lynne M. Bernstein and her husband Joseph Rouse of San Francisco, CA, and Jill E. White and her husband Clark and niece Morgan White of San Anselmo, CA. Paul is also survived by many aunts,, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews he loved from the Bernstein, Kaufman, Witkin and Sandler families. From Theresa’s family he was surrounded by loving family members of Sheehans, Colones, Bouchards, Sabines, and Fitzpatricks.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 11:30 am in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford. Interment will follow in Beth Alom Cemetery, Allen St., New Britain. The family will receive relatives and friends at his home Tuesday following the interment through Thursday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
