Armin Gelb
Armin Gelb of West Hartford passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at age 99. He had lived a fulfilled life. Born in Czechoslovakia April 15, 1911, he immigrated to the United States in 1939. A US Army veteran of World War II, he served as Staff Sergeant in Australia and New Guinea and received letters of commendation from General McArthur. He was predeceased by the love of his life Zena Davidovic Gelb in 1988. Together they had settled and grew their family in Hartford. Mr. Gelb was the owner of Armin’s Jewelers in Hartford, Middletown, Manchester, and Berlin, and founder of G and G Realty, West Hartford. He actively supported the Yeshiva of Hartford, the Young Israel Synagogue of West Hartford, and was a member of the American Jewish War Veterans. He served as President and Gabai of the Young Israel of West Hartford and was charitable to many causes. He loved and was dedicated to his family and community and found pleasure in his support of others and taking care of his grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by his two sons and daughters-in-law: Drs. David and Susanne Gelb of West Hartford, Dr. Lawrence and Attorney F. Gina Gelb of Fairfield; 6 grandchildren: Attorney Paul and Dr. Chana Gelb of Los Angeles, CA, Dr. Adena and Attorney Dov Goldman of Bergenfield, NJ, Rena and Tzvi Schwartz of Stamford, Amy and Kevin Shacknofsky of New Rochelle, NY, Jonathan J Gelb of Greenwich, and Dr. Jeffrey and Debbie Gelb of Riverdale, NY; and 10 great grandchildren: Eitan and Nava Gelb, Yaniv, Shayna, Leora and Atara Goldman, Shane, Eva and Tamara Shacknofsky, and Joshua Schwartz. The funeral was held at the Young Israel of West Hartford officiated by Rabbi Brahm Weinberg and the burial took place at Cemetery Eretz Hachaim in Bet Shemesh, Israel alongside his wife Zena Gelb attended by his sons David and Larry. They began their Shiva at the home of their cousins Rabbi David and Lisa Lichtman in Modiin, Israel. Shiva will resume at the home of David and Susanne Gelb, 47 Norwood Rd., West Hartford from Wednesday through Sunday morning.
