Charles Norwood
Charles Norwood of Hartford passed away Sunday evening (October 11, 2009) surrounded by family at Hartford Hospital. He was born in New Haven in 1917. After attending Wesleyan University, he graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. He served in the United States Army for 4 ½ years and fought in the Pacific Theater during World War II. A media pioneer, he was one of Connecticuts first local FM radio and television newscasters. Subsequently, he served as Assistant Director of Tourism for the State of Connecticut. Upon retirement, he worked for 15 years at the Hartford Courant in the research and sports departments. He was a long-time member of Temple Beth Israel, as well as a violinist for the Connecticut Valley String Orchestra. He is survived by his wife, Ella Feldman Norwood; his daughter, Helen Feldman Miller and Angelo DelGreco; his son, David Charles Norwood and his wife Marsha Sunshine Norwood. He is also survived by three grandchildren and one great-grandchild: David Samuel Miller; Diana Joan Miller; and Joel Charles Norwood, his wife Alyssa Rose Norwood, and their son Eliot Peter Norwood. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 14, at 10am in the Sanctuary of Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, with Rabbi Stephen Fuchs officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon at the Woodland House, 31 Woodland Street, Apt. 3K, Hartford. An evening service will follow at 6:30pm. Arrangements entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
