Dorothy Emanuel
Dorothy Emanuel, 88, formerly of Edison, NJ, died Sunday, (July 27, 2008) in Bloomfield. Dorothy was born on January 30, 1920, in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Joseph and Bertha (Muhlberg) Falick. On June 30, 1944, she married Salvatore Emanuel of Brooklyn, and they shared 49 joyful years of marriage until his death in 1993. She moved to Duncaster Retirement Community in 2005, and although she resisted leaving the family home in Edison, she found many new friends and open arms in Connecticut. Dorothy is survived by a son, Richard Emanuel and his wife Janet Rettig Emanuel of Guilford; a daughter, Judith Emanuel Puretz and her husband Abe Puretz of East Hartford; a beloved granddaughter, Rebecca Puretz; and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her brother, Nathan Falick and her sister, Marsha (Falick) Krumholz. Dorothy loved the arts -- she painted, drew and sculpted. She also enjoyed swimming at the health club in the company of her friends. She was a passionate singer, and for many years she was a member of the Sweet Adelines International Singers. She always had a song in her heart and a song on her lips. She also loved the sweet sounds of the dollar slot machines in Atlantic City. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the wonderful staff at Duncaster and at Caleb Hitchcock Health Center. The family is also grateful for the compassionate care she received from Dr. Beth Nelson and the staff at the St. Francis Hospital Cancer Center in Hartford. The family sends very special thanks to Linda Lawrence, RN, and Amy Sumner, LCSW, and the McLean Hospice program, for providing Dorothy with extraordinary love and care in her final months. Dorothy was interred next to her husband on July 30, at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens in Woodbridge, NJ, after a private service. She will be missed every day. Memorial gifts of remembrance may be made to McLean Hospice, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, CT 06070
