Benjamin C. Schilberg
SCHILBERG, Benjamin C. Schilberg, of Sandstone Dr., South Windsor, died Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Manchester Memorial Hospital. Born in Willimantic, he was the son of the late Nathan and Bella (Dollard) Schilberg. After attended the University of Connecticut Benjamin served as Technical Sergeant in the US Army with the 133rd Infantry in North America and Italy during World War II and received a Purple Heart. Benjamin joined his father as a scrap rags paper and metal dealer at the conclusion of the War. He was instrumental in growing a peddler trade into Schilberg Integrated Metals, Corp., a world-class metal merchant, which he served as president for 30 years until his retirement in 2002. Among his industry activities he was a member of The Copper Club, American Copper Council, Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries and the Wire and Cable Manufacturers Alliance where he was awarded the Distinguished Career Award. Benjamin was a member of the UConn Club for 50 years being recognized with the Outstanding Contribution Award in 2007. Spending much of his time in community service, Benjamin was a Past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans and a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and AMVETS. He was actively involved in the Willimantic Lions Club and served two decades on the Willimantic Planning Commission. He was also a member of Congregation Bnai Israel of Rockville and Temple Bnai Israel of Willimantic. He leaves his wife, Joyce (Feinberg) Schilberg; his sons, Bernard C. Schilberg and his wife Beth of South Windsor, and Nathan B. Schilberg and his wife Barbara of South Windsor; his brother, Sidney Schilberg and his wife Pearl of Bristol; and five grandchildren, David, Bryan, Robb, Joshua and Justin Schilberg. He was predeceased by his sister, Sylvia Schilberg. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 2:00 pm in Temple Bnai Israel, 327 Jackson St., Willimantic with interment in Temple Bnai Israel Cemetery, Mansfield. A memorial period will be observed Wednesday following the funeral through Wednesday evening at the home of his son, Bernard, and Thursday and Saturday evenings at the home of his son, Nathan.
