Harold Berger
Harold Berger, 87, formerly of West Hartford, died peacefully (January 5, 2008) in Middletown, CT. He was born on June 23,1920 in New York, NY, son of Max Berger and Bertha (Cosgrove) Berger, and graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School before moving to Detroit, MI, where he test drove cars for Ford. In 1943 he married his childhood sweetheart Dorothy Schoenberger and enlisted in the army, where he served four years as a first lieutenant in the European theater, billeted in Marseille, France. After he returned home from the war, they moved to Connecticut and he began working for Greenspon's Hardware. Soon afterwards, he opened Sutton and Brewer Hardware Stores in East Hartford, and in 1971, with his son Marc, founded Balmar Marine in Canton. Mr. Berger retired in 1987. He and Dorothy were one of the founding families of Temple Sinai, in Newington, CT in 1959. Harold was an avid hunter and fisherman and particularly enjoyed traveling around the world. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Schoenberger) Berger and daughter Maxine Lois Berger. He leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Ronald Kleinman of Boston, a son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Phyllis Berger of Niantic, grandchildren Adam Kleinman, Emily (Kleinman) Golin, Denise Berger, Michael Berger, a great granddaughter, two nieces, and a nephew. Private services will be held at Weinstein's Mortuary on January 8. Contributions in Mr. Berger's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
