Sylvia Glassman Sachs
SACHS, Sylvia Glassman Sachs, June 11, 1921-September 7, 2007. Born in Ludlow MA, Sylvia moved with her family to Hartford, CT, where she graduated from Weaver High School. She attended Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, and received her B.A. degree from New York University. She worked in advertising in New York City, where she met her future husband, Julius J. Sachs, MD. They were married at Rockledge Country Club in West Hartford on June 25, 1944. The family moved from New York back to West Hartford in 1951, and Sylvia devoted herself to her husband and four children. She was an active community volunteer, serving as a Girl Scout leader for many years, and PTA President of Whiting Lane School. During the late 1960s, she chaired the Conard High School American Field Service Committee, which provided opportunities for exchange students, and welcomed an exchange student from Vietnam into her home for a school year. She shared her love of literature, drama, dance, and music with her children and grandchildren. Once her children were grown, she worked as an administrative assistant at Hall High School, and later as an administrator for the Hartford Womens Network and for Hartford College for Women. She brightened the lives of all who knew her with her generous spirit, cheerful smile, and helping hands. She was predeceased by her husband, Julius Johnson Sachs, M.D., and her sister Lillian Sandals. She is survived by four children and their families: Rhoda Sachs Zahler of New Haven CT, Carolyn Sachs (and Alan Ciamporcero) of Tampa, FL, Harriet ( and Vito) Sessa of Rye, NY, and Joseph Alan Sachs, (and Tess Bovard Sachs) of Los Angeles, CA. She leaves six grandchildren and their families, Joanna (and Ramon) Herrera, Daniel Zahler, Andrew Sessa, Ben Sessa, Anna Ciamporcero, and Julian Sachs, and two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Lucas Herrera. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 9 at 2:45 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel, Silverman Chapel, 701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, CT with Rabbi Stephen Fuchs officiating. Interment will follow in Beth Israel Cemetery, Avon, CT In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 225 N.
