George L. Solomon
George L. Solomon, 85, of West Hartford, died on Wednesday, (July 11, 2007), another victim of cancer. Born in Hartford on June 28, 1922, he was the son of the late Sam and Ruth (Schneider) Solomon and the stepson of the late Rubin Baggish. He graduated from Weaver High School, Hartford in 1940 and he devoted many years to keeping his cherished high school class active and unified through their reunions. George received his Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University in 1947 where he was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma in his junior year. He also served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II, primarily with Allied Forces Headquarters in North Africa and Italy. After graduation from college, George joined his uncle's accounting practice and earned the title of Certified Public Accountant in 1949 by passing the state examination on his first attempt. This partnership was dissolved in 1962 and George went into private practice until he retired in 1984. George was a member of Beth El Temple of West Hartford, a member, past president and past financial secretary of the Hartford Mutual Society, and for more than 50 years a member of the Connecticut Society of CPA's. Among his non-occupational activities, George was an avid amateur with West Hartford's "Way off Broadway" theater group in the early 1980s and later appeared in shows produced by the Jewish Community Center. He also volunteered in the Fitness Center of St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. He suffered through over-par golf and sub-par bridge but excelled in corny jokes. George had a respect for and love of the English language. He enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and decoding cryptograms, and his letters to the Hartford Courant were often published. George was proud to be a "Jack of all trades". Surviving George are those he loved and who loved him: Beatrice (Black) Solomon, his wife of 61 years; his devoted daughters: Rita Solomon of South Windsor and Shelley Cetel and her husband Alan of West Hartford; and two granddaughters: Tracey Cetel and Jill Cetel, both of West Hartford. He also leaves a sister, Shirley Rosenfield and her husband Frank of Bloomfield; a brother Donald Baggish and his wife Roberta of Delray Beach FL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 13, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Ilana Garber officiating. Interment will follow in the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, Wolcott Rd., East Granby. A memorial period will be observed at his home, 52 Old Meadow Road, West Hartford Friday following the funeral through Sunday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 659 Tower Ave., 1st Floor, Hartford 06112 or to the Hebrew Home and Hospital, 1 Abrahms Blvd., West Hartford 06117.
