Herbert E. Karp
Herbert E. Karp, 74, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Groton Long Point, CT, died Sunday, April 22, 2007. Born in Lowell, MA, he was the son of the late Maurice and Ida (Budnick) Karp. Herb graduated from Berkeley Preparatory School in Boston, MA and received a BS degree from the University of Lowell. He received a masters degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maine, where he had a teaching fellowship, teaching chemistry and algebra. Herb received a Doctorate in chemistry and thermodynamics from Yale University. He also had a teaching fellowship at Yale and he taught chemistry and algebra there as well. He then went to work for the Federal Government in its Nuclear Energy Program. Herb left to establish his own business, Technical Coatings Laboratory, Inc. in Avon where he developed several formulas and patents which are in use in the coating industry. At its inception the business supplied paint for product finishing. The business developed into an international supplier of coatings for graphics and golf balls. Its hot stamping foils were widely used not only for golf balls, but on products such as greeting cards by Hallmark and American Greeting cards. As a business leader, Herb was recognized in 1996 by the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce as Mid-Size Business Leader of the Year. He and his staff worked with the State of Connecticut in the area of environmental controls to develop environmental approaches which address the needs of small and mid-sized business and thus aid in maintaining and retaining such businesses in Connecticut. He was a member of the Judicial Review Council for the State of Connecticut. His personal activities included political activities, serving as the Finance Chairman of the State of Connecticut Republican Party, as a member of the Environmental Committee for the Republican National Committee, and as a member of the Groton Republican National Committee. Other service activities included Co-Treasurer of the Connecticut Chemical Council and member of the Connecticut Business and Industries Associations Connecticut Chemical Council. He was also a member of Beth Hillel Synagogue in Bloomfield. Herbs three personal passions were his wife Rhoda, fishing as a former competitive tuna fisherman, and golf. He leaves his wife, Rhoda (Chase) Karp; and a brother, Joel R. Karp and his wife Carol R. Karp of Jensen Beach, FL; step-daughter, Susan Silverstein and her husband Richard and their children, Sydney, Samantha and Joey of Boca Raton, FL; step-sons, Bruce Levi and his wife Judith and their children, Aaron Joshua Levi and Shane Parker of Glastonbury, CT, and Malcolm Levi and his wife Jackie Choy and their son, Jaichi of Brookfield, CT; Herb was pre-deceased by his first wife, Ethel (Blumenthal) Karp and by his daughter, Ruth Seutter. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 26, 2007 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. Interment will follow in the United Synagogues of Greater Hartford Memorial Park, Wethersfield, CT. A memorial period will be observed at the Clubhouse at Hunter's Run, Avon, CT, Thursday 1:30-8:30 PM and Friday 10:00 AM-12:00 noon.
