Edward Carton
Edward Carton, 86, of Oliver Way, Bloomfield, formerly of West Hartford, died Friday, August 25, 2006 at home. He was the husband of Esther Norwitz Carton for 58 years. Born in Hartford in 1919, he was the son of the late William and Anna (Dolgaruk) Cohen. He grew up in the Bronx, NY, and graduated from James Monroe High School in 1936 in New York. In 1942 he graduated from the UCONN College of Pharmacy. Ed was a WWII Army veteran and participated in the invasion of Normandy as a staff s/sgt. He was then employed as the general manager of Maxwell Drug Stores for 30 years. While working at Maxwell Drugs, he met the love of his life, Esther Norwitz. In 1965, he founded Carton Drugs on Farmington Avenue in Hartford. He was one of the founding members of Beth El Temple of West Hartford, a Hadassah Associate, and a life member of the Hebrew Home and Hospital. He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans. During his retirement, Ed volunteered at the West Hartford Superior Court for 6 years as an aide to the Probation Department. In 1994, Ed, along with his wife, volunteered in the Israeli Army for 2 months where they worked dispensing medications on a Kibbutz. He also sponsored Russian immigrants through the Hartford Jewish Federation. He was a member of the West Hartford Regents. Besides his wife, Esther, he leaves two daughters: Wendy Carton of Avon, and Shelley Carton of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren: Adam and Jennifer Scheinberg of Altamonte Springs, FL, and Robin Scheinberg of Somerville, MA; a sister: Toby (Cohen) Thames of Pennsylvania; sister-in-law Florence Abel of West Hartford; and a brother-in-law Samuel Fagin of Longmeadow, MA. Very close and beloved nieces and nephews as well as a multitude of both great and great-great nieces and nephews also survive him. In addition, throughout his life his family and friends were the core of his existence and he leaves many dear and longtime friends. He was pre-deceased by brother Joseph and brother and sister-in-law Moe and May Cohen and sister and brother-in-law Bea and Maxwell Rulnick, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sydelle and Irwin Black, and sister-in-law Rhoda Fagin, brother-in-law Charles Abel and brother-in-law Dr. Sidney Norwitz. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, August 27, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford with interment following in the Beth El Temple Cemetery, Avon. A Memorial Period will be observed at his home, 175 Oliver Way, Bloomfield on Sunday following the funeral through Wednesday evening.
