Message: My Dad, Christopher Speer and Dr. Waltman shared an office at Hartford Hospital in the 1960's. How I loved going to see my dad and Uncle Waltman as I used to call him. He took a rose thorn out of my foot when I was four and he pierced my ears for me when I was 15! I have the most beautifully pieced ears in West Hartford thanks to him. They are perfect! As a little girl I loved his kind eyes and sweet smile. Your yellow house on the corner of Asylum was as cheery as his personality! What a wonderful man and I have such warm memories of him. My love to all of you at this sad time.

Message: Marjorie and family: My sincere condolences on the passing of a wonderful, wonderful man. My connections to "Chick" Waltman are numerous: He was a good friend of my father, who would have been 100 this past year; my dad's and my mom's and my wife's trusted surgeon; and the father of one of my very favorite Hebrew School classmates. Over the last several years I had the pleasure of bumping into Dr. Waltman in the grocery store or at the Post Office, and he never failed to make me smile with a story about my dad back in his high school days. I was also fortunate to see and chat with him just a few months ago at Jefferson Radiology. Of course, he recognized me before I recognized him. We had a wonderful conversation...as always. What a wonderful man -- and life. My best, Todd

Message: My 4 sisters and I, surviving children of Eleanor and Morris Tulin, remember our Dad's stories of his lifelong & close friendship with Chick and Fran. When our Dad faced late-diagnosed and complicated cancer surgery, he of course asked his loving & brilliant friend Chick to look inside and do what he could. Though our Dad did survive the surgery for another few years, we will never forget how Chick broke the bad news to our Dad, Mom and us. He was kind, honest, and clinically clear about the painful prognosis, while all the while he was wiping his own tears from his eyes from the pain and love he was experiencing for his old friend "Morrie." May Chick's heart, skills, life of service and caring for so many others be a blessing, & be a source of comfort and inspiration to his family and all those who so appreciated and loved him - David Tulin

Message: Dear Fran, I just learned about the death of your beloved Chick. May his memory be for a blessing. I was delighted to learn that he was a lover of the Hebrew language, a love which I share. I recall with fondness how Hannah and I visited you and Chick in Rhode Island with my parents in the late 1960's, shortly before we were married. I also remember being present at the presentation of the Wallant Prize in the 1960s to Hugh Nissenson for his book, A Pile of Stones. Your ongoing support of Jewish cultural expression is a true tribute to your lives. May you continue to be blessed. Kol tuv. Marshall and Hannah Kramer

Message: Chick Waltman was a well-educated, dedicated physician, loyal to his hospital practice, his faith, his community and his patients. He was a rare combination of all these traits, for which all with whom he came in contact were the better for it. My parents and grandparents knew him well, as did I. His life was indeed For A Blessing.

Message: So many wonderful memories of Dr. Waltman. Sitting in his car during the Loomis days when he would quiz us (Laurence and me) on our vocabulary skills, eating his herring and cream in Rhode Island, and also knowing him as a guiding light and memorable man whose capacity for generosity and care was boundless. The world is a little worse when some one like Dr. Waltman passes. But his memory will live in all of us whose lives he touched. Love, Alan Showe

Message: Dear FRAN and family, just read the sad news, only days after voicing praise on Chick to visitors. You were one of the first people we met on arriving in town , 54 years ago, and one of the first to be made to feel like family. Chick then went on to be a shining example of what medical practitioners should be, and act. His clinical acumen was only matched by his gentle touch in the operating room, where he was an example and set goals that we only aspired to . We will miss him, but never forget. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. RUTH & Bert
