Message: On this day of reflection for my Grandfather I reflect on his service to his country and how he served his country proudly in the War to end all Wars. When I think of his service to his family I think of his missed opportunities he had and memories missed. As the hockey great Wayne Gretzsky said: "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." My grandfather missed many shots sadly and reading the memories posted many of these reflect a man I never knew nor saw in my own life. I wish I knew this man many of you feel so highly of but unfortunately I do not. What I did learn from knowing my grandfather was to be a better citizen, brother, son, and friend not from his actions but his inactions. As Charles Kuralt put it best "The love of family and the admiration of friends is much more important than wealth and privilege" And more importantly: courtesy of Martin Luther King Jr:“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” I choose love.
