Message: As are so many others, I am deeply shocked and saddened by Mark's untimely passing. Of course his medical skills were top notch, as evidenced by his being a dootors' doctor. Compassion, sincerity and wit were his stock in trade. We lost a great one.

Message: We were incredibly shocked and saddened to learn of Mark’s sudden passing. We have been privileged and honored to have had him as our very caring family doctor for thirty years. Mark’s medical knowledge was incredible, but what really set him apart was his wonderful compassion and dedication to his patients. We were especially blessed because what began as a professional relationship developed into a friendship. Mark’s loss has left an enormous hole in our heart and soul. Carolyn, Perry, Suzanne and Alex. Mark often expressed how proud he was of you all and we cannot imagine what his loss means to you. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to you. You and Mark are now, and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers

Your joking and teasing will be missed by your niece Anna and nephew Tim. My heart is dripping with sadness. Thank you for being, you. It was wonderful the day that you joined our family. I had someone to talk golf and Phil M! I/We will all miss you so very much. You were so respected as a doctor, as a husband, as a father and step father as a brother and brother in law, and as a friend. Know that I will care for your "Carolyn" and be there for her always. Message: We were both so heartbroken and shocked to hear of the death of our friend and physician. Mark has cared for our family for over 20 years. We could share anything with Mark and trusted him without question. Year after year he remembered details of our lives and always asked about things that we couldn't believe that he remembered. Mark helped us through some very tough times with medical knowledge, honest advice and his legendary dry sense of humor. His passing is a tremendous loss for his wife, children and siblings, but also for his patients who he cared for with such honesty and compassion. This man will be greatly missed.

Message: I too was shocked by Mark's death! He had been my doctor for many, many years - since Dr. Cannon left his practice. When he recommended specialists, he was spot on. He was funny & thorough. When a doctor walks with you through tough times it is very difficult to picture life without him there. He seemed to be content & happy the last years and that was surely a good thing to see. My thoughts and prayers are with his family!

Message: I was a patient of Mark's (he insisted that I call him "Mark," not "Dr. Robbin") for many years, but it wasn't until about five years ago that I learned what an extraordinary person he really was. I visited Mark, asking for something I'd never had before--and never dreamed that I'd ever need: anti-depression pills. Mark asked me why and I told him that my wife, in a totally unexpected move, wanted to divorce me. Mark's eyes flashed with a look of shock (he knew my ex-wife as well as me and considered us both good people). Then, in a quick motion, he put aside his medical folder and drew his stool up close. "Why?" he asked. I thought he was referring to my request for the meds. "I can't sleep, I can't eat, I feel a vibration throughout my body all the time," I said. "I understand," he replied, "But why?" I realized it wasn't a medical question. It was a question of genuine concern and empathy. I started to tell him my story, he told his own. I learned that he, too, had known the pain of an unexpected divorce. We shared our experiences, feelings, confusion and thoughts. Many were the same. I realized that Mark wanted to help in a way far beyond what his prescription pad was capable of. He had known the pain I was going through, and he wasn't going to let another person go through that alone. Mark spent well over an hour--it may have been closer to two hours--with me. I apologize to the patients that were kept waiting. And even in the midst of my crisis, which had drawn me inside myself like nothing ever had, I began to focus on Mark. I thought: No other doctor would do this. In fact, few people in general would have listened the way he listened. Fewer still would have dug deep into their own souls to share their experience with me. After all, I was his longtime patient, but not his personal friend, not his best buddy. I realized he was doing something extraordinary. He had gone through the pain, and he wasn't about to let another person go through it alone. He also gave me his personal mobile phone number, in case I needed to talk. (I never used it.) Later, I wrote Mark a thank-you card, letting him know the wonderful thing he'd done for me, and how grateful I was. He called to thank me for the note. He said, "This kind of thing is what I really do this for but it's rare that anyone expresses their appreciate like this. This is great. Thank you. Really." There was not a trace of the arrogance that many people associate with physicians. With Mark, there never had been. He felt humbled, grateful. I felt that no amount of thank-yous I could send his way would repay what he'd done for me. My heart goes out to Carolyn, Perry, Suzanne, Alex and all members of Mark's family. I do not know you, but you all share something with me. Our lives have been made better because we knew a truly wonderful, caring man. I will miss him.

Message: The first time our family met Dr. Mark Robbin, there was a beebee lodged in our middle school age son's chin. Mark said he was glad to perform minor surgeries once in a while for a change. He smiled while he took the beebee out. That was around 30 years ago and he was our family's doctor ever since. He has seen us through many health changes and his advice was trusted. Our prayers go to his family who will have to navigate life without this good man.

Message: My wife, Betsy, and I were shocked and saddened by the news of Mark's passing. As long time patients, we felt a real personal loss. We valued his sincerity, empathy, and interest as well as his good humor even in times of stress. Most of all we had implicit trust in his medical advice, his knowledge and his practical and common sense approach. He went beyond the call in responding to questions and concerns. As a doctor, we are not sure he can be replaced. He was a model for the way medicine ought to be practiced. He was obviously proud of his family. Our deepest sympathy to all. Dick and Betsy Hurley

Message: It is with GREAT saddness that my husband and I have heard about Dr. Robbin's passing. Both of us have been seeing him as our PCP since 1990. He has been amazingly attentive, intelligent, accurate, unassuming, humorous, and supportive of us and all our healthcare needs over all those years. When my husband had a very frightening facial palsy episode, Dr. Robbin was fast-acting, compassionate, quick to determine a specialist was required, making an appointment for us that same day, and continued to follow up with us until we got resolution. When I had a serious headache issue, Dr. Robbin called my home several times over a long Memorial Day weekend to check on and monitor my status and offer whatever assistance he could (off hours and leaving me his HOME phone number to contact him in case I needed something!) His compassion and knowledge will truly be missed by many more than us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you mourn his loss.

You blessed so many lives, comforted so many, and gave so much of yourself. You touched lives with your perpetual goodness. You always acknowledged your shortcomings in life and in this were so human and approachable to so many. I will miss you more than you know, with an emptiness that will never be filled. Message: I was so stunned and saddened to read of Mark's death in today's paper. He has been my physician for the past 12 years, and before that he was my dad's and stepmom's physician. I just saw Mark last month and he said he had some health issues to deal with but nothing too major. I trusted him 150% when it came to anything to do with health - he was never wrong in diagnosis. I never felt rushed when at a dr. visit with him, he was so thorough, professional and warm. He would always personally follow up on any major concern I had. I will miss him very much - I always felt I could count on him. It struck me in recent visits that he was at a very good place in his life - very happy with his wife, his family, recent trips...to his family I would say that Mark was deeply respected and loved by his patients. I will never forget him. May he rest in peace. -Mary Kate Lowndes

He made everyone feel so special and made you feel not like a patient but like a close friend. I will miss all the talks we had, his amazing knowledge of medicine and how he could fix any ailment you had. Message: I saw Dr Robbin on July 15 for a brief visit. I had only been to him twice in 1 1/2 years. I knew him from taking my mother to him for the last few years of her life. Each time I arrived, I had a joke for him and grew to truly respect him. One thing not mentioned in the obit was he was a true advocate for my mother, and I'm sure all his patients. He listened and acted on what he heard. On July 15th, I told him what two visiting nurses who helped monitor my mother told me, regularly - that they had never dealt with a doctor like him. He would listen to their findings and concerns, and would discuss solutions. One nurse called him from my house with a potential problem, and was told by his staff member to call back at 4:00. She told me she would call at 4:00, but not to expect to hear from her because there would be no way he would be "available" to talk with her. Apparently, she'd been through that before with other doctors. Just after 4:10 that afternoon, she called me to tell me that Dr. Robbin wanted me to bring my mother in the next day - anytime (he knew that it would take a while for me to feed, dress and get her down the steps, and out to the car). She would be the next patient. As a sub for the regular nurse, this was the first time this nurse had spoken to him. She could barely talk in full sentences...she called at 4:00 and he seemed to be waiting to take her call. He spoke to her with total respect (apparently that's not the norm in dealing with doctors she had contact with regarding patients). I had already heard similar statements from the regular visiting oncology nurse. He and his staff were great to deal with! And as he was leaving the exam room that July 15th, I also brought up the last visit with my mother (she died in her sleep a few days later, most likely according to her urologist, from her severe kidney disease). He explained what he was going to do to remove an odd growth on the top of her had. She wondered out loud if getting a needle there on her hand would hurt. He said "no." Having taken my mother to her many, many appointments with various doctors, I rarely would say anything unless I had to. But I did think to myself - How could it NOT hurt?? She questioned him how it wouldn't hurt. I waited for his answer also. With no smile on his face, he replied that the injection wouldn't hurt because was going to first kick her on her leg, then give her the needle. That did it - I lost it, burst out laughing. He slightly turned his head towards me and smirked. To make it even funnier, my mother wanted to know why he was going kick her. I laughed even more. She wasn't known for having a sense of humor. So, on July 15th, after I retold that story to him, he stopped heading out the exam room door, thought for a brief moment, turned slightly towards my direction, gave me that same smirk, and told me that I would be surprised how many patients didn't think it was funny. Well, he and I - and others were right. It was funny. Those that may have disagreed? Wrong! Your loss can't be measured. You lived with, loved and knew the person. As his patient for a very short time, and the daughter of his long time patient, I feel the the medical community lost a unique doctor and his patients will not easily find a comparable doctor to Dr. Robbin. Good, if not great ones are difficult to find. Thank you for letting me share only some of my thoughts with you. Most Sincerely, Karen

Message: Billy and I are deeply saddened by the unfortunate and untimely passing of Mark. This must be so extremely difficult for all of you; know how much we are thinking of all of you. I began seeing Mark when he just started out in his practice.... he was in the Starbuck's building. Right from the first visit, I knew I had hit the jackpot and had found the greatest doctor! An exceptional listener, very intelligent, caring, empathetic, a great sense of humor .... I could go on and on! I remember the time I broke down crying in his office... I was having lots of medical problems as well as personal ones. Embarrassed, I expected him to get annoyed as so many doctors might have done. Not Mark! He took the time to listen and empathize. He was a remarkable doctor who showed his patients that he truly cared... not solely about their physical problems, but about emotional ones as well. Over the years, Mark became a friend to us. When we found out that I was finally pregnant at age 41 (after many years of trying) Mark was as excited as we were! He sent a beautiful baby blanket after Matthew was born. Then, he started the annual "Birthday Bash" trip.... taking Matthew to Necker's and buying out half the store! I always insisted that Mark limit his giving... his generous and playful side would have no part of that!( Perry... you were a teenager by now and I think that your dad was having Necker's withdrawal!) Mark was so very giving.. often treating us to wonderful dinners and Billy to golf outings. Whenever I went to his office we would always spend time talking about our kids. He was very proud of you, Perry! Our family will miss him tremendously. I hope that he knew how many people he has helped in so many ways. We will always remember how special Mark was and all that he gave.

Message: I was very saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Dr. Mark Robbin. He was my primary care physician for over 20 years. At my annual physical he would always joke about how he was exactly 1 day older than me. During the exam we would discuss our latest golf exploits at the Farms or wherever. Over all those years he provided me with excellent medical care and was more than happy to recommend specialists in the area if required. He will be missed. My sincerest condolences to his family.

Message: One person can make a difference and Mark was a man who did. He made a difference to all of us who were his patients. He was a doctor in all of the very best measures of the profession and in the essential goodness of his heart and in his practice with us. My husband and I chose to work with Mark nearly 20 years ago when we moved to the area. Our wonderful neighbor told us about his doctor - Dr. Robbin - a man he trusted, admired, and enjoyed. We met Dr. Robbin and felt the same way. When our neighbor became ill, Mark came to his house in person to share the prognosis and ensure that our friend enjoy a full, joyous life until the end. Mark was a collaborator, a partner, in our life and health. He was a comfort and brought us into his deliberations and wonderings, without pretense. We learned a lot together from all our shared bumps in the road and he was generous with his smiles, council, and patience. We counted on Mark, liked him greatly, and felt secure in our life with him. When I was told of his death, I was in his office, hoping to see him. Mark's death hit us like that of a family member. We know we are not alone in this. We celebrate his life and the privilege it has been to have him as our doctor. His colleagues, medical technicians, office staff, and other patients throughout the area, all echo the same words about him. He will be sorely missed. He made a difference. A real difference.

Message: When I first came to CT nearly 30 years ago, Mark was recommended by my employer. He was the first medical professional I met in the area and he continued to be my primary care provider ever since. I am truly shocked by his passing. He was part of a rare breed that took the time to ask questions about your health and never failed to express concern if it was less than optimal and joy if you were in a total state of wellness. He cared about preventive medicine as he cared about the value of life and living it to its fullest. He will be missed by all who knew him as a doctor or as a friend.

Message: I could not have asked for a better physician - for it is Dr. Mark that I attribute to saving my life and why I am still here today. I recently saw him and thanked him again and he modestly did not want to take the credit. That was who Dr. Mark was...a fantastic physician and great man! This is a loss for all of us and I was blessed for knowing him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and patients.
